HEATER REPAIRS

A pool heater that won’t fire, won’t hold temperature, or keeps throwing error codes doesn’t have to mean a full replacement. Our technicians diagnose gas and heat pump heaters accurately and get your water back to temperature fast.

Most heater issues are repairable not replaceable. Ignition failures, pressure switch faults, heat exchanger scaling, and error codes are specific, diagnosable problems. An accurate diagnosis almost always reveals a targeted fix rather than a full unit swap.

POOL HEATER REPAIRS — GAS & HEAT PUMP

A pool heater is one of the more complex pieces of equipment in your system  combining gas supply, ignition electronics, heat exchange, flow sensing, and safety controls all in a single unit. When something goes wrong, the symptoms can range from a heater that simply won’t fire to one that runs briefly and shuts off, one that displays an error code you can’t decipher, or one that heats slowly and can’t reach the set temperature even after hours of operation.

At Pool Tech USA, our technicians are trained to work on both gas-fired heaters and electric heat pumps across all major brands including Pentair, Hayward, Raypak, and Jandy. We approach every heater repair with a systematic diagnostic process checking supply, flow, ignition, sensors, and heat exchange in sequence so we identify the actual fault rather than replacing parts until something works.

Common Heater Problems We Repair

Ignition failure is the most common heater issue. In gas heaters, it is usually caused by a faulty igniter or hot surface ignition component. A dirty or failed flame sensor can also prevent the system from confirming ignition. In some cases, the issue is related to gas supply, such as a closed valve or low manifold pressure. The heater may try to ignite once or twice, then fail and lock out with an error code. Our technicians test each stage of the ignition sequence to identify the exact fault.

Pressure and flow switch faults are another common cause of heater problems. These issues can prevent the unit from starting or cause it to shut off soon after ignition. Pool heaters require a minimum water flow through the heat exchanger to operate safely. This protects the system from overheating. If the pressure switch or flow sensor is faulty, the heater may not run. Low water flow can also trigger this issue. Common causes include a dirty filter, a closed bypass valve, or a plumbing restriction. We test both the sensors and the actual flow conditions to find the root cause.

Heat exchanger scaling develops gradually, especially in Southern California’s hard water conditions. Calcium deposits build up inside the heat exchanger over time. This reduces efficiency and forces the heater to work harder. As a result, it takes longer to reach the desired temperature. In severe cases, scaling can restrict water flow and trigger safety shutoffs. We use chemical descaling to clean the heat exchanger. This restores efficiency and helps prevent damage from overheating.

Gas vs. Heat Pump Heaters — What We Service

Gas heaters heat pool water quickly and are the preferred choice for pools that aren’t heated continuously they can raise water temperature by several degrees per hour, making them ideal for heating on demand before a swim session. Common repair issues on gas heaters include ignition components, gas valves, heat exchanger scaling, and control board faults. We carry a range of commonly needed gas heater parts and can complete most repairs in a single visit.

Electric heat pumps operate differently they extract heat from the ambient air and transfer it to the pool water rather than generating heat by burning gas. They are significantly more energy-efficient in mild climates like Southern California and are well suited to pools that are kept at a consistent temperature year-round. Heat pump repairs typically involve refrigerant issues, compressor faults, fan motor failures, or defrost cycle problems all of which require specific diagnostic equipment that our technicians carry. We service all major heat pump brands and can source replacement components for both newer and older units.

Pool Tech USA serves residential and commercial clients throughout Brea, Yorba Linda, Fullerton, Placentia, Anaheim, and Corona. Most heater repair visits can be scheduled within the same week.
