Restore Your Pool's Plaster to Its Original Brightness
An acid wash is the most intensive surface treatment for a plaster or marcite pool. Pressure washing removes surface debris and loose scale. In contrast, an acid wash dissolves mineral deposits, algae stains, rust discoloration, and calcium buildup bonded to the plaster. This process creates a surface that looks brighter, cleaner, and closer to its original finish.
At Pool Tech USA, our trained technicians perform acid washes with precision and care. We use properly diluted hydrochloric acid solutions and work from top to bottom across all pool surfaces. We neutralize the area thoroughly after treatment. Also handle wastewater disposal in full compliance with local environmental regulations. When done correctly, an acid wash can extend the life of your plaster and remove stains that would otherwise require a full replaster.
When It's Needed
The Right Situations for an Acid Wash
An acid wash is not a routine service. It acts as a targeted intervention for pools with surfaces that other treatments cannot restore. The most common scenario involves a drained pool, either deliberate or following a severe algae bloom. In these cases, the plaster walls and floors show visible green, brown, or black staining embedded in the surface. Unlike surface stains, these penetrate the material. They require the chemical action of an acid wash to dissolve and lift them out.
Heavy calcium and mineral scaling also drive many homeowners to choose an acid wash. In Southern California, hard tap water and high evaporation rates accelerate buildup. Over time, calcium carbonate can accumulate aggressively on pool surfaces. When scale spreads beyond the waterline tile onto the main plaster walls and floor, pressure washing alone often fails to remove it effectively. The acid reacts directly with the deposits. It breaks their bond with the plaster and allows the scale to wash away.
Pools left neglected for long periods also make strong candidates. This is especially true for pools that have gone dry or developed long-term algae infestations. Prolonged neglect often creates a mix of biological staining and mineral buildup. This combination requires the deeper chemical action of an acid wash to fully restore the surface. In some cases, an acid wash can help homeowners avoid replastering. Replastering is a much more expensive solution.
Our Process
Precise, Safe, and Thoroughly Executed
Every acid wash begins with a complete drain of the pool. Once the shell is exposed and dry enough to work on, our technician prepares the acid solution at the appropriate dilution ratio for your pool’s surface condition. Heavier staining may require a slightly stronger mix, while lighter cases call for a more diluted solution that removes staining with less impact on plaster depth. Getting this ratio right plays a critical role in achieving excellent results without over-etching the surface.
Our technicians apply the acid solution systematically, working from the top of the walls downward in sections. They scrub it into the surface with a stiff brush, allow it to dwell briefly, and then rinse it off with a hose. They repeat this process across the pool walls, floor, steps, benches, and waterline until they treat the entire surface uniformly. Consistency mattersuneven application creates patchy results, so our technicians treat each section with the same method and dwell time.
After completing the acid wash, our team flushes the entire pool thoroughly with fresh water. They then apply a soda ash neutralizing solution to raise the pH of the residual wastewater before pumping it out. This step supports environmental responsibility and meets local discharge regulations. Once they flush and inspect the pool, they begin the refill and carry out a careful chemical startup sequence to protect the freshly treated plaster surface from the moment the water is added.
What an Acid Wash Cannot Fix
It’s important to set honest expectations about what an acid wash will and won’t accomplish. Because the process works by removing a very thin layer of the plaster surface along with the staining, it is inherently a treatment with a limited number of applications over a pool’s lifetime. Most plaster pools can withstand two to four acid washes over the course of their lifespan before the plaster becomes too thin to safely treat again. If your pool has already had multiple acid washes and the plaster is approaching the end of its serviceable depth, we will tell you honestly that a replaster is the more appropriate solution.
Acid washing also cannot correct structural cracks, delaminating plaster, rough or pitted surfaces caused by aggressive chemistry over many years, or staining caused by certain metal compounds particularly copper from algaecide use that have deeply oxidized into the surface. In these cases, we will identify the issue during our pre-treatment assessment and discuss the best path forward with you before any work begins.
